Oak & Buffalo

tall oak, and buffalo running over the range
a hot sun hides the shadows that remain
and all the street signs read the same
names common and mundane
set in stone, they'll never change
we were new and strange
bright colors and bold lines
swift and clever and wild
without sobriquet
and the ones we couldn't name
left bereft in cleansing rain
new canvas scorned will never change
our forms took on meaning
depth of line and subtle shade
stood so close we filled the space
ever harder to define
and all the lines we couldn't trace
beyond the borders of the page
will lead us on a merry chase
and our hearts we will never chain
and though we struggle with the name
we will always have oak and buffalo
